The 22nd Bombardment Squadron was constituted at Hamilton Field, California, October 20, 1939, as the 22nd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), then, in 1942, redesignated 22nd Bombardment Squadron (Medium), assigned to 10th Air Force (from activation in India) and later operated under 14th Air Force in China. The unit saw combat in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) from Dec 1942 through July 1945. Stations included Karachi and Chakulia (India) and Kunming/Yangkai (China).
The 22nd flew B-25 Mitchells primarily between 1942 and 1945 in tactical and strategic medium-bomber operations against Japanese lines of communication—railroads, bridges, locomotives, supply depots—across Burma, the Bay of Bengal, French Indochina and southern China. The group developed special techniques for bridge attacks and received a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations in French Indochina (December 11, 1944, through – March 12, 1945).
Nicknamed early on the "Bombing Eagles," the 22nd later used an approved squadron emblem, the “Bombing Bulldog,” a B-25 caricature approved March 19, 1945 The squadron suffered combat losses (multiple MACRs recorded) while operating long-range B-25 missions from India and China.
The 22nd returned to US and was deactivated November 2, 1945. Celebrate the brave men of the 22nd with this tee!
