Our seventh president, Andrew Jackson, was a colorful and controversial character.  He was a man of violent passions, a duelist and military officer who was wounded many times.  He was not one to overlook an insult.  Jackson was asked at the end of his presidency if he had any regrets. "Yes," he replied. "I regret I was unable to shoot Henry Clay or to hang John C. Calhoun."  But he had a softer side, as expressed by his quote, "Americans are not a perfect people, but we are called to a perfect mission."  Jackson was a flawed man, as are we all, but, as Americans, we continually strive to live up to our founding ideals, our perfect mission.
