George Washington "Armed and Ready" Motivational Graphic Tee

George Washington has been called the "indispensable man" of the American Revolution.  While there can be, and is, interminable debate about who were the greatest contributors to the success of the War of Independence, George Washington certainly makes the short list.  First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen, as Lighthorse Harry Lee remembered him.  He was an amazing man.  While subjected to constant plotting and criticism, the Pennsylvania Journal stated about Washington, after his victory at the Battle of Long Island in 1776, "If there are spots on his character, they are like spots on the sun, only discernible by the magnifying powers of a telescope."

The full quote, from the book,  "Maxims of Washington; political, social, moral, and religious," by John Frederick Schroeder: "To be prepared for war, is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.  A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined. To this end, a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite.”  According to the 1828 version of "Webster's Dictionary," the word discipline is defined as "Instruction and government, comprehending the communication of knowledge and the regulation of practice; as military discipline which includes instruction in manual exercise, evolutions and subordination."  So a free people must be knowledgeable and practiced in the use of arms, in other words, ready.
