The Second Triumvirate, consisting of Octavian, Mark Antony, and Lepidus, implemented a series of proscriptions in 43 BC to eliminate political enemies and raise funds for their military campaigns. These proscriptions were a systematic process where individuals were declared enemies of the state, leading to the confiscation of their property and the legal right to kill them. The primary aim was to avenge Julius Caesar's assassination and consolidate their power.
The proscriptions targeted a wide range of individuals, including senators, wealthy citizens, and political opponents. It is estimated that around 300 senators and 2,000 equestrians were executed, with many more fleeing or being pardoned. The triumvirs also offered substantial rewards for the capture or execution of those on the proscription lists.
The proscriptions were not only a means of eliminating opposition but also a tool for financial gain. The process was marked by widespread fear and paranoia, with many individuals betraying their friends and family for rewards or to avoid being targeted themselves.
The Second Triumvirate's proscriptions had a significant impact on the Roman Republic, contributing to its eventual collapse and the rise of the Roman Empire.
