Teddy Roosevelt's speech delivered at Forest Hills, Long Island, New York, July 4, 1917, when the United States was at war with Germany, read in part, "Weak-kneed apologist of infamy say that it is 'natural' for American citizens of German origin to favor Germany.  This is nonsense, and criminal nonsense to boot.  Any American citizen who thus feels should be sent straight back to Germany, where he belongs.  We can have no 'fifty-fifty' allegiance in this country.  Either a man is an American and nothing else, or he is not an American at all."
